The legal aspects of starting and running a business are often the most challenging for a small business owner. From what entity type to select to creating contracts and collecting on debt most small businesses need help but are unsure of where to turn. Melodee Henderson-Silmon, Managing Attorney, of Henderson-Law Group helps to demystify the legal side of business. Check out Melodee’s original pitch and my interview with her.

What key piece of advice would you give to other business owners?
The late comedian George Burns said, “I’d rather be a failure at something I love than a success at something I hate.” My advice to other business owners is to find a viable business you love, and stick with it. It takes passion to wake up every day and be completely dedicated to what you do.
Each question that I am asked is unique, but I do often get clients who tell me that they are ready to register their trademark or trade name. My answer is preceded by a number of questions which often uncovers that the client would like to take their business to the next level, but isn’t quite ready to actually go through the trademark registration process.
How do you define success?
Success, in my opinion, is being able to learn from and survive your setbacks, and use them as stepping stones for reaching your goals. Failing forward to success is not a bad thing.
What separates your business from the competition?
Because we are a virtual law firm, we don’t take on all the expenses and overhead of a brick and mortar firm. Accordingly, we don’t have to pass those costs on to our clients. That makes us more affordable for entrepreneurs and small business.
What and or who inspires you?
I am inspired by the small business owners who wear many hats. They put a lot of blood, sweat, and tears into their business. Small business owners employ most of America and are what make this country great.
